We managed to get up early enough to contact the bike folks and secure out spot for the morning tour. Got out of the house by 8:45 and what should have taken maybe 30 minutes took a little over an hour. The traffic in Cape Town is insane. Kudos to Geoff. He is doing great with our little stick shift car -- driving upside and backwards. Even found the lights last night!!
Arrived at V&A Waterfront Ferris wheel pretty much on time to meet up with our guide and the rest of our bike buddies for the day -- a young couple from Germany and a young couple from Palmer, Alaska -- not too far from G's brother. The tour is a bit more than 3 hours, maybe 15 miles tops -- some bike path, sidewalk and mostly streets. Our guide, Jeremy did a great job of showing us the sights. Some history, culture, and beauty all mixed in. I asked about the Jewish Museum and he knew all about it. Turns out he is Jewish. We had a great chat - all things Jewish. On route, some of what we saw was part of the Berlin Wall, the train station, Parliament, stadium, District 6 (the movie District 9 is based on this area), one of the most picturesque streets in the world (although I think we saw better in Colombia). Ending with a beautiful ride down along the waterfront. Please look at the album for the complete itinerary.
We parted with our group. Jeremy gave us some tips as to how to get to Table Mountain in the morning without going through the traffic we went through today. Didn't have anything planned. Did not feel like hanging around the Victoria Mall (where the wheel is). This place is nothing put shopping and food and lots and lots of people. Time to get the car. After driving around and around for a bit, we finally figured out the exit and we were off to the Jewish Museum.
Thank you google maps. Navigated our way to a parking lot near the museum. This complex has the Jewish Museum which is a history of the Jews in South Africa (mainly came from Lithuania), a Holocaust Museum, and the Great Synagogue. All of which were not only information but mind blowing. Even had a cafe so we could grab a bite. We were able to visit all three and back to the car by about 4 or after.
We took the sea route around Table Mountain and got back to the house by 5:30 -- more traffic. By this time, we were exhausted. I had made a lovely valentine's day dinner reservation down at Kalk Bay overlooking the ocean. That meant back in the car for another half hour or more. That wasn't going to happen. We took our time, relaxed some and after a nice shower we went back to the Lime Tree Cafe where we ate last night. A five minute drive and the sea bass was to die for.
We are back in our room and I hope to get this post done before the power goes out tonight. Happy Valentine's all.
NOTE: Due to power difficulties today's photo album will hopefully be up for tomorrow.
Next time.... Table Mountain and Robben Island
