Canopy Tour

Slept like a log as they say.  Skies were a bit iffy but much more promising than the last couple of days.  Had a leisurely breakfast on the deck before heading out to our next adventure - zip lining through the trees. It is about a half hour drive to Storm River Village where the canopy company lives.  Naturally we arrived early so we got to join the 10:30 tour instead of the 11am we booked.

Fine with us.  We joined two other couples - on from Germany and one from Belgium. Got all rigged up, loaded on the bus and away we went.  There were 9 zip lines and a small bridge crossing.  You start off with the short ones and work your way up to the long and speedy ones.  The skies cleared up and it was nice and sunny gliding through the forest.  It seemed a bit different from the
experience we had in NZ but it was still great fun!  A good time was had by all.  At the end there is the inevitable hike uphill to get back to the bus. Bonus - lunch is included.  Ate with the German couple till we all had to leave.

When we left the restaurant, we were headed to the car when I caught sight of Marilyn's 60's Diner. I had read about this somewhere and voila! here it is.  We walked around and we were thrown back in time.  Nothing like USA nostalgia in the middle of the South African bush!!  The only telltale are the steering wheels on the right hand side.

Again we were getting ready to get into the car, when noticed that the establishment next door to the diner was a micro brewery.  Well we had to see that.  Popped in and got a quick tour of the brewery. It is very small scale - nothing like our nephew Keith's brewery in Hudson.  Talked with the brewer/owner. He said most of what he learns is from the US.  There are several small breweries all over South Africa. They really can't distribute, so they just supply their own taps and maybe the local resort/hotel. Wished them well and we were finally back on the road.

When we pulled into the park, it was covered with cars, buses, and mega tourists!! Oy - the weekend. This place is nice but way too many day-trippers.  Fortunately, there aren't many folks actually staying here at the moment. But you can see from the photos, there is a lot of ground for tents, caravans, and cabins.  In season, this place must be absolutely nuts!!

We wanted to get wet so we searched for the pool.  Ooops, closed.  Back at the cabin, we changed and decided to take our chances at our local little beach down by the Adventure Center.  Not too crowded.  However, upon further inspection, Geoff found a wonderful little grotto with a very refreshing waterfall.  Not a soul was around, perfect! Cooled  down under the waterfall and then  so we parked ourselves in the sand and read.  We had the place to ourselves for a good 2 hours and then it was the invasion of the little people.  All at once, we were surrounded by kids and their adoring parents.  Time to go.  Packed up and walked back to our cabin.  We were fortunate we had the place to ourselves for as long as we did.

The buses usually leave right around dinner time. So they should be gone by the time we go to the mess tent.  One more night here and we are off to explore yet another coastal town.  Posting this early, going to dinner and then it'll be lights out soon after that!

Just back from dinner and the sunset was incredible - oh the food was good too.  We sat on the rocks and took lots of pictures.  Thought I would make a bonus photo album because I couldn't choose just one shot.  Some remind me of Deidre's paintings.  What a great way to end our stay at Tsitsikamma.

  1. Marilyn's 60's Diner is something else with all that memorabilia. I hope the menu has old fashion milkshakes and chili.

As to the sunset pics I've never ever seen anything like this. You're lucky to have this experience. I have seen some of the Aurora colors but not like this. It is like a Deidre painting.
